From Clicking Around to Actually Understanding Word

Thinking back on Phase 1 of IS101-3005, I feel like I did pretty solid overall. The early part of the class helped me get more comfortable with Microsoft Word. I realize just by doing LabSim that Word is way deeper than just typing and saving a document. If I could change anything moving forward, I will start practicing sooner instead of waiting until right before quizzes or assignments. I’ll also pay more attention to the bonus quizzes.

One topic from Chapter 4 that really clicked for me was 4.10.4: Table of Contents. Before this class, I honestly didn't even realize what table of contents was or how it worked. Now I realize the heading styles are way to important is more than just a simple headding style above your paragraph. Learning that the table of contents depends entirely on properly using Heading 1, Heading 2 and etc, completely changed how I format documents. It made me see that structure matters just as much as how a document looks. Once you set things up the right way, updating the table of contents is quick and saves a lot of time, especially for longer papers.

For the upcoming MO-110 Word certification exam, my plan is to stay ahead and practice a lot. I have also learned that knowing where things are and how they work together is key for the exam. Now that my History class is almost over I will have more time available for this class so I can prepare more for future IS101 exams.

Overall, I think this class have changed how I see Microsoft Word. It’s easy to think it’s just a basic program everyone already knows, but features like the table of contents show how useful it can be when used properly. For anyone reading this, learning these tools the right way makes your work cleaner, faster, and way less frustrating when working on new projects.

  1. I'm glad IS101-3005, Spring 2026 changed how you see Microsoft Word, Gian :-)

May this apply to other digital literacy topics and tools as our semester progresses ^_^

Yes, you have, are, and will continue perform well, Gian!

  2. I agree that Microsoft Word is more useful than just for writing essays. I enjoyed studying about the different commands in Word because it broadened my perspective on what the application is useful for. One of the useful features is the dialog box that gives text different styles. This allows me to distinguish the titles of sections from the rest of the text on a document. Before taking this IS101 class, I would distinguish the titles from the rest of the text by bolding and underlining them.

  3. Hi Gian, I can relate to what you said about Microsoft Word being deeper than just typing and saving documents. Before this class I also thought Word was just a simple program, but LabSim really showed that there are many features hidden behind the interface. The Table of Contents part surprised me too because I didn’t realize how important the heading styles were. Once you understand that Heading 1, Heading 2, and the structure control the whole document, it changes how you format everything. It’s actually one of those things that saves a lot of time once you learn it properly. I also agree with you about practicing earlier instead of waiting right before quizzes, that’s something I’m trying to improve as well.

Good luck on the MO-110 exam, it sounds like you already have a solid plan by staying ahead and practicing. Knowing where things are in Word really does make a big difference during the exam. Having more time now that your history class is almost finished should definitely help. Hopefully the extra practice will make the exam feel more manageable.

  4. Hi Gian, I like how you’re committed to starting your studying sooner and reflect about your progress. The table of contents definitely changed the way I organize my documents, but honestly, there are so many other functions I didn’t even know I could do until I took this class. The References tab, for example, has been super useful for my essays in ENG 114. Learning these tools the right way really makes everything cleaner, faster, and less frustrating.
